“Thou Shalt … Offer Up Thy Sacraments upon My Holy Day”

temple-door-nob

How do you feel when you enter the temple?

“And that all people who shall enter upon the threshold of the Lord’s house may feel thy power, and feel constrained to acknowledge that thou hast sanctified it, and that it is thy house, a place of thy holiness.” D&C 109:13.

What makes it different from other places?

In Genesis 2:1-3, the Lord instituted the Sabbath. What makes it different from other days?

The purpose of the Sabbath is for spiritual uplift, for a renewal of our covenants, for worship, for rest, for prayer. It is for the purpose of feeding the spirit, that we may keep ourselves unspotted from the world by obeying God’s command.

Elder Orson F. Whitney said,

The Lord’s plan is perfect . . . his commandments have in view the salvation of the body as well as the spirit, for it is the soul that will be redeemed from the grave and glorified. God has commanded us to care for the spirit, as well as for the body, and give it food in due season, and He set aside the Sabbath day that man might rest from his temporal labors and go to the house of the Lord and be fed with that holy influence which nourishes the spirit of man. That is why we meet together on the Sabbath day. Our spirits need their food, the same as do our bodies and if we neglect them, they will starve and dwindle and die upon the same principle that the body will die when deprived of its proper nourishment. (Liahona, the Elders Journal, February 5, 1910, vol. 7, p. 530.)

This lesson is about the Sabbath day. In many ways, we can “enter” each Sabbath day with the same reverence we feel when we enter the temple. We can remember that the Lord has sanctified the Sabbath and that it is our privilege to worship and serve him on his day.

Here is the handout for this week’s lesson: D&C-Church History Lesson 16.
