GM1 Gospel Doctrine – Book of Mormon Lesson #47 & #48 [Sunday, 28 December 2008]

#47: “To Keep Them in the Right Way”, Moroni 1–6

#48: “Come unto Christ”, Moroni 7–8, 10

In our last lesson this year we cover the remaining chapters of Moroni. At first not supposing he would write more, Moroni is able to add a few additional items of spiritual wisdom to his record. These precious truths concern such gospel topics as the sacramental prayers, baptismal requirements, our responsibilities to care for one another, the doctrine of fasting and praying, the commandment to meet together oft to partake of the sacrament, the constant need for repentance, and the need to conduct our meetings by the Spirit.

Moroni provides clear instruction regarding the transcendent truths of how we find our way through life “in the light of Christ” (Moro. 7:19); how to judge between good and evil; how to infuse our lives with faith, hope, and charity; and how to come under the power and blessings of the Atonement by acting in faith on the invitation to come unto Christ and be perfected in Him. Our purpose for coming to this earth is summarized in beautiful simplicity within these final testimonies of Moroni and his father.

Summary

  • Moroni 1. Having survived the destruction of the Nephites, Moroni continues his writings. He must remain in hiding because he “will not deny the Christ.”
  • Moroni 2–5. Moroni teaches about essential gospel ordinances.
  • Moroni 6. Moroni explains the requirements for Church membership and the need for record keeping and fellowshipping.
  • Moroni 7:1–19. Mormon explains how to judge between good and evil (note that these words were recorded by Mormon’s son Moroni).
  • Moroni 7:20–48. Mormon explains that faith in Christ is the power by which miracles are wrought. He explains the importance of faith, hope, and charity.
  • Moroni 8. In a letter to Moroni, Mormon outlines the conditions of salvation and explains that little children are saved through the Atonement of Christ.
  • Moroni 10. Moroni explains that the Holy Ghost bears witness of all truth to those who ask in faith. He describes spiritual gifts and exhorts all to come unto Christ.
